What Is A Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that completely covers the visible portion of a tooth. In most cases, a crown’s purpose is to protect a weakened tooth from further damage and strengthen it so it can continue to function well. Crowns may also be used to restore a dental implant or to improve the appearance of a misshapen or badly discolored tooth.

Crowns may be made of various materials, including gold, silver, or porcelain-fused-to metal. In our office, we prefer to use all-ceramic (porcelain) crowns. The dental ceramic closely resembles the look and feel of natural teeth. It even reflects light in a manner that is similar to that of natural tooth enamel. Most patients who receive all-ceramic crowns are very pleased by how their restoration complements the surrounding dentition. The ceramic is also quite durable and resistant to stains.

Do You Need A Dental Crown?

You might need a dental crown if:

  • One of your teeth has recently undergone root canal therapy. Such teeth lack their former strength and often require a crown to protect them.
  • A tooth is decayed to the point where a regular filling, onlay, or inlay would not be enough to repair it.
  • You are suffering from cracked tooth syndrome, a condition wherein there are small cracks in a tooth but no part of the tooth has broken off yet.
  • One or more teeth has suffered premature wear and tear due to bruxism (habitual teeth grinding).
  • You received a dental implant and need a crown to replace the visible portion of your missing tooth.
  • You want a traditional fixed bridge to replace a missing tooth. One or two crowns will support an artificial tooth (teeth) that “bridges” the empty space.
  • You have an old crown that is damaged, or you want to replace an old crown for the sake of aesthetics.

The Dental Crown Process

It usually takes two appointments to place a dental crown. At the first appointment, your dentist will prepare your tooth by filing it down or filling it in; this step helps to ensure that the crown will fit well over the tooth. Then, our team will take detailed images and impressions of the prepared tooth and the surrounding structures. That data serves as the basis for designing your permanent restoration.

You will wear a temporary crown while a dental laboratory creates your permanent restoration. Once your new crown is ready, you will return to our office for your second appointment. Before we attach the crown to your tooth, we will double-check to make sure that it fits in perfectly with your bite.
