Invisalign® – Manchester, CT

A Convenient Orthodontic Treatment

Misaligned teeth pose a threat to your oral health, and they may make it difficult for you to feel confident in social situations. Orthodontic treatment has the power to realign your teeth and reduce your risk of future dental problems. At First Line Dental, one of the orthodontic options we offer is Invisalign®. This convenient and effective treatment is suitable for most adults and teenagers who want to straighten their teeth without the use of traditional metal braces.

Why Choose First Line Dental for Invisalign®?

How Invisalign® Works

Holding Invisalign

Traditional braces work by using brackets and wires to apply gentle, sustained pressure to the teeth. Over time, as the braces get tightened little by little, the teeth move into their proper positions. Invisalign® also applies gentle pressure to the teeth. However, it uses a series of clear, custom-made thermoplastic aligners. Throughout the treatment period, you wear each aligner for 20 – 22 hours each day for about two weeks before you graduate to the next one. After you work your way through all of the aligners, you will wear a retainer to make sure that your teeth do not drift back out of place.

The Invisalign® process begins with an in-depth, complimentary consultation in our office. We will evaluate your orthodontic problems, discuss the details of your treatment options, and design a custom plan to meet your needs. If Invisalign® is right for you, we will take detailed images and impressions of your teeth, which Invisalign® will then use to create your aligners. After you start wearing your aligners, it will be necessary for you to visit our office periodically for brief checkup appointments.

Invisalign® is able to treat most types of orthodontic issues in teenagers and adults, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, rotated (crooked) teeth, and gaps between the teeth. However, individuals with severe orthodontic problems may need to use traditional braces instead. Also, keep in mind that Invisalign® requires a measure of commitment. You should be determined to wear your aligners the recommended amount each day. Failing to do so could drastically slow down your treatment.

Factors that Affect the Cost of Invisalign®

The price of Invisalign® in Manchester may depend on:

  • The number of aligners you need. If you have a relatively long estimated treatment time or you wish to straighten both dental arches, you are likely to require more aligners, which can increase your total financial obligation.
  • Whether you need any accessories. You might require attachments for Invisalign® to do its job effectively, which can add to your overall price.
  • Your compliance with treatment. If you accidentally lose an aligner, you may have to pay for a replacement. Additionally, if you do not wear your aligners as much as recommended, it might cost extra to get your treatment back on track.

Invisalign® vs. SmileDirectClub™: Cost vs. Value

SmileDirectClub™ and other DIY clear aligner systems are quite popular, primarily because they usually cost around $2,000 or so. Invisalign® typically costs more than that. However, it is important to remember exactly what you are paying for.

With DIY systems, your aligners may be constructed out of cheap plastic. Invisalign®, on the other hand, uses a patented plastic material that is designed for comfort and precise tooth movements. DIY aligners do not come with the support of a qualified dental team, which increases the risk that human error will adversely affect your treatment outcomes. If your teeth do not move as they should, you might end up spending quite a bit of money to get them fixed during retreatment. Invisalign® takes place under the close supervision of a highly trained dentist and their team, which means that things are likely to go right the first time.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Invisalign®?

Some dental insurance plans have a lifetime maximum for orthodontic treatment. Such plans usually do apply to Invisalign®, which means that you might be able to get around $1,000 or so off of your treatment price. Our team will be happy to help you file insurance claims and get the most out of your benefits. If your plan does not cover Invisalign®, it might be possible to use your FSA or HSA to help you pay for it.

How Long Does Invisalign® Take?

On average, start-to-finish treatment with Invisalign® takes about 12 months. Your treatment may require more or less time; it depends on the extent of your dental misalignment and other factors. Some patients can straighten their teeth in as little as 6 months. Others, though, must wear Invisalign® for 18 months or longer. Admittedly, 18 months may seem like a long time. However, you are still likely to enjoy a shorter treatment than if you chose traditional metal braces instead.

Does Invisalign® Hurt?

Invisalign® aligners are made out of a patented form of plastic that is designed to be as comfortable as possible. It is quite thin, and the edges of the aligners are smoothed out so they will not irritate the gum tissue.

Of course, it must be acknowledged that orthodontic treatment works because it applies pressure to the teeth. Naturally, this can cause some discomfort. It might be especially challenging when you start out with Invisalign® or when you switch aligners. Sipping on cool water, starting to wear a new aligner at night, and using over-the-counter pain medications as necessary may be able to take the edge off any discomfort that you experience.

If you ever experience any severe pain with Invisalign®, call our team right away.

What Happens After Invisalign®?

After you work your way through all of your aligners, we will examine your teeth to verify that the results of your treatment are what we expected. If everything looks good, we will provide you with a retainer. A retainer is a small device that prevents your teeth from drifting out of place; without it, all of your hard work with Invisalign® could quickly be undone!

At first, you will need to wear the retainer full-time. After some months, however, we may give you the go-ahead to wear it only at night.

What if My Invisalign® Broke?

If you notice some hairline fractures on an aligner, you might be able to continue wearing it. You will just need to be extra careful when you are taking it in and out of your mouth.

If the damage is more severe, call your cosmetic dentist in Manchester. We might advise you to wear a previous aligner until we can order a replacement for the one that is no longer usable. It is also possible that we will tell you to switch to a new aligner a few days early.

Keep in mind that you should not try to repair an Invisalign® aligner with superglue or any other substance that was not meant to be used in the mouth.
